Summer Internship Programs
Our Summer Internship Program is a great way for you to learn about Random House and the publishing business and for us to learn about you. We offer internships at our headquarters in New York and in our operations center near Baltimore, Maryland. Here's what some of our recent interns have to say about their New York internships:
"...every day I learn more, and that's what I wanted. This internship is probably the best thing I could have done before graduating from college.""In addition to helping in the office, I've had a chance to go on retail sales calls, check out bookstores and write up call reports. That experience made the whole thing come alive."
"By doing P&Ls, I learned what goes into making a book. During the process, I visited almost all the departments to determine each book's design fees, printing costs, legal payments, publicity expenses, advance, sales, royalties—there's a lot to include."
"Pay attention to the people around you. Most people love to talk about what they do, and about how they got here. Listening to these stories alleviated my fears of being pigeonholed; there are countless facets and opportunities that exist in this industry. Keep your ears up. You just might find a new path and a new method to getting what you want in a career."

Since 1990 our Internship Program, which is geared to students between their junior and senior years in college, has been hosting college students who have a serious interest in the business of book publishing. This ten-week session, which runs from mid-June to mid-August, has been called "a first rate publishing internship" by The Princeton Review.
Following orientation where you meet the other interns and human resources staff, you're off to start your tour of duty in your assigned area. The internship is structured, but not rigid. While we endeavor to place interns in areas of interest, wherever you may be assigned you will learn something about the other departments, too.
Approximately once a week, interns get together for lunch to hear key executives speak about their roles and the work done within their divisions. Speakers may include experts in publishing, publicity, editorial, marketing, finance, production and elsewhere. Interns also travel to our Operations center in Maryland for a tour of the facilities and to hear from key executives there.
Participating in the program could be the first step in a publishing career here. Over the years many alumnae have joined Random House upon graduation, continuing our tradition of looking to our internship program as a resource for hiring.
Internship postings will be online around the middle to the end of February. Please keep checking the website and submit your application at that time. The deadline for the application to the Summer Internship Program is April 16 of this year. To apply to the Internship Program, search the Random House job board. If you are a senior in college, you might be interested in learning more about entry level opportunities, including the Associates Program. If you are a sophomore in college, we encourage you to apply for a Summer Internship at Random House next year.

In their own words
“It is evident that Random House employees love what they do, and as a growing intern, that disposition is contagious. By the end of the summer, I found myself acquiring the same esteem. Random House’s profound corporate culture generates a one-of-a-kind internship program that I highly recommend.” |
