Associates Program

While some college graduates express a desire to work in a specific field in publishing, such as marketing, editorial, or publicity, others may be equally passionate about publishing but want to know more before committing to an area. Such individuals may be interested in the Associates Program.

This one-year program is based in New York City and provides a year of training and exposure to many different aspects of the book publishing business. An associate is assigned to a specific publishing imprint or division and then rotates through its various departments. Understanding how different departments function, depend on, and relate to each other can help associates make a more informed decision about the next step in their publishing career. This knowledge will continue to be helpful as they move up the ladder.
In addition to learning on the job, associates and others in entry level positions benefit from periodic lunchtime seminars that provide an overview of different aspects of the book publishing business. These seminars offer opportunities to learn from the best people at Random House as well as to meet and exchange ideas with peers in other departments.
The basic concept of the Associates Program is to explore and learn more about the many facets of publishing before committing to a particular area. After one year in the program, associates are encouraged to apply for open positions within their area of interest.

To apply to the Associates Program, please visit the Random House job board. The Associate Program usually starts the second week of July and applications are accepted online from January 1st through March 15th each year.

Here's what employees who recently graduated from college say about working at Random House:

"As an assistant, I have a terrific boss who has opened my eyes to the publishing world. This top publishing company offers amazing opportunities and challenges, as well as exceptional benefits."

"At Random House, the veteran employees I work with value your opinion as much as everyone else's. Entry-level employees are not 'placed on the sidelines' at Random House, but rather, they are encouraged to contribute from the moment they arrive."

"Although it's the largest publisher in the world, there's a relative feeling of closeness in each of the divisions. People around you really notice the work you do, and it does pay off."
